Korean Skincare Routine for Oily Skin

With the so much information going on the internet, and especially on Tiktok, there's been a circulation of the same products, for the same skin type.

The information becoming overwhelming, and for some, they are just sharing to catch up with a trend, but this becomes a cost for the ones who are looking for genuine creators who share genuine reviews of the Korean products.

What makes this blog different, is that I took time to go through the active ingredients to pick on what is good for an oily skin, I personally have a very oily skin, I could just wash my face in the morning with water, and 2 hours later, my forehead is shiny.

Having an oily, means you need to know the kind of products to use and which not to use too often, so we're gonna go in steps, on how to have a Korean skincare Routine that actually does the job

KOREAN CLEANSING

Double Cleansing

This is a two-step facial washing method, originating in Korean skincare, that uses an oil-based cleanser first to dissolve makeup, sunscreen, and sebum, followed by a water-based cleanser to wash away impurities, dirt, and sweat, ensuring a deeper, more thorough clean that allows other skincare products to penetrate better.

Exfoliating Your Skin

This is going to sound 'unpopular' but for an oily skin, you need to exfoliate 3–4 times a week, which helps in removing excess sebum and dead skin cells, preventing clogged pores and acne.

We have the tendency of buying any skincare products, because an influencer said it works, then we get exhausted and thing that skincare is a scam. But the truth is that, no product is getting in your skin, to help work on it, so it becomes zero work.

Key products include chemical exfoliants like: AHA, BHA, PHA these are chemical exfoliants used to remove dead skin cells and improve skin texture, but they differ in strength and suitability.

  • AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids) are water-soluble for surface exfoliation and anti-aging,
  • BHAs (beta-hydroxy acids) are oil-soluble for deep pore cleaning
  • PHAs (poly-hydroxy acids) are gentle, hydrating, and ideal for sensitive skin.
My recommendation: The Anua - Heartleaf Quercetinol Pore Deep Cleansing Foam

With an oily skin, you want to avoid too many products.

How to Double Cleanse

  1. Start with the oil cleanser, to remove the sebum and the make up, and the sunscreen, because all these products are oil soluble
  2. Emulsify while oil cleansing, this is just adding a little bit of water, which will make the mixture look milky
  3. Then rinse everything off with lukewarm water
  4. Then take the cleansing foam, put a pea size on your hand, then add very little water so that the foam is created, then go with the foam on your face
  5. Leave the foam for 3 minutes, then rinse

TONER

Korean toners for oily skin, effectively balance sebum and unclog pores and hydrate without residue.
Small discalimer, about the toner I'm recommending, it doesn't have the beautiful roses smell, I will however give you two safe option for the oily skin toner.

Provides lightweight hydration while calming irritation

Controls sebum and tighten pores

How to use: Apply using a cotton pad to gently wipe away remaining impurities, or pat directly onto the skin for faster absorption.

KOREAN SERUMS

There are so many Korean serums, that serve a different purpose. But now we are dealing with oily skin, and for every oily skin, the blocked pores bring the following:

  • Acne Breakouts and Clogged Pores: Excess oil traps dead skin cells, bacteria, and dirt, causing frequent blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples.
  • Enlarged Pores: The excessive production of sebum can stretch out pores, making them appear larger and more visible.
  • A "Vicious Cycle" of Over-cleansing: The frustration of the shine often leads people to wash their face too frequently or with harsh products, which strips the skin and triggers even more oil production.
  • Post Acne Marks: These form when the acne has died down, and left a black spot, and can lead to hyperpigmentation
  • Whiteheads: Result from excess sebum, dead skin cells, and bacteria clogging pores, often appearing in the T-zone.
The goal of the serums is to support the work the double cleansing does.

Here's some of the Korean skin serums I recommend:

Korean Day Serums

The aim of day Korean serums is to control oil, shrink pores and prevent breakouts

  • Sebum regulation: 2% Niacinamide and 0.5% BHA work together to control excess oil and reduce shine.
  • Pore and acne care: BHA gently exfoliates to unclog pores while 60% Propolis Extract kills bacteria and reduces acne-related inflammation.
  • Hydrating your skin without oiliness: Delivers a moisturizing, dewy finish without clogging pores or feeling greasy.
  • Skin repair: Helps fade acne scars and improves uneven skin tone
How to use: Apply 2-3 drops to the face and pat gently to aid absorption.

When you have an oily skin, and are experiencing excessive sebum production, then your skin is most likely dry. Because of the blocked pores, no moisture is getting in, which leads to more oil production.
The Isntree hyaluronic acid water is for hydrating your skin, after the double cleansing.
How to use: Apply 2-3 drops to the face and pat gently to aid absorption

Now that you have these two Korean serums for day time and know their essence, you can decide to alternate one for each day.

Korean Night Serums

The aim of the night serums for oily skins, is to unclog pores, fade dark spots and repair the skin.

  • Strengthens and repairs the skin barrier.
  • Reduces acne, promotes faster healing and reduces the appearance of pore
  • Controls excess sebum

KOREAN MOISTURIZER

Korean moisturizers focus on lightweight, oil-free hydration, barrier repair, and calming ingredients (like Cica or Heartleaf) rather than heavy, occlusive ingredients.

This is a lightweight, gel-type cream that hydrates without clogging pores. It has Niacinamide to balance oil and Centella asiatica to calm active acne and redness.
This moisturizer features salicylic acid(BHA) to deep-clean pores and tea tree extract to kill acne-causing bacteria, treating blackheads and whiteheads while hydrating.
This is best to use if you have fungal acne and pores, it is non-comedogenic that soothes irritation without triggering fungal acne
This moisturizer is best for post acne marks(scarring). Has high concentrations of panthenol to repair the skin barrier and help fade dark spots(post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) while being non-comedogenic, not best if you have fungal acne.
You can decide to start with one of the moisturizer depending on your current needs.

KOREAN SUNSCREEN

Sunscreen is a MUST especially when you're fading any dark spots, or dealing with hyperpigmentation.

SPF 50, broad-spectrum, Lightweight, Oil-Free

A broad spectrum protection means it protects against
  • UVB - Burns + Surface damage
  • UVA - aging, pigmentation, collagen breakdown
Should be lightweight texture:
  • gel based
  • water-based
  • fluid
  • essence
  • milk
  • serum sunscreen
Should be oil free and non comedogenic.
No heavy fragrance
Too much = irritation -> inflammation -> pigmentation (We don't want this)

How often to apply your sunscreen

Every 2-3 hours if:
  • You're outdoors
  • You're sweating
  • You're in heat
  • You're near a window
Every 4-5 hours if:
  • You're indoors, away from windows, no direct sun

How much sunscreen is enough? For face and neck you want to use the two fingers technique... not a pea size or a dot or a light layer

My recommendations: Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics SPF50+ PA++++
This sunscreen fends off UVA and UVB rays, this organic sunscreen comes in a lightweight cream texture that absorbs quickly into skin without leaving a white cast. The chemical sunscreen contains niacinamide to leave your skin glowing.
2nd recommendation: Isntree - Hyaluronic Acid Daily Sun Gel
It is a lightweight, gel-like cream that feels like a moisturizing lotion. It offers a "dewy" or hydrated finish, and is not greasy
